Hillel mourns, celebrates life of student
November 17, 2005
Tomorrow family and friends of Kent State student Melanie Scheinberg will gather to celebrate her life.
Scheinberg, 20, was found dead in her Engleman Hall room on March 16. The Portage County Coroner’s Office ruled that Scheinberg had taken her own life.
In commemoration of Scheinberg’s life, Hillel will host a memorial service along with its traditional Friday Shabbat service and dinner.
The service, which begins at 5 p.m., will be accompanied by a traditional Jewish mourning prayer called the Mourner’s Kaddish.
Friends and classmates also are invited to speak, said Hillel assistant director Mike Levinstein.
“Anybody who wants to share something can share something,” he said.
Levinstein said anyone who would like to attend the 6 p.m. Shabbat dinner may do so. The dinner, which normally costs $5, is being paid for by the Scheinberg family.
Levinstein said the service, though mourning the loss of Scheinberg, is designed to be a positive remembrance of the life she lived.
“We want to remember and celebrate her life and move forward in a positive way,” he said.
Those who wish to attend the Shabbat dinner should contact the Hillel office at (330) 678-0397.
