Greeks go pumpkin bashing for charity
October 16, 2005
Fraternities and sororities kicked off the Halloween season with Lambda Chi Alpha’s third annual Pumpkin Bash on Saturday.
Pumpkin Bash was held by the rock at front campus and benefited Lambda Chi’s philanthropy, the North American Food Drive. The fraternity’s goal for the semester is to raise 10,000 pounds of food.
Each team competed to win the Pumpkin Bash through a series of games and contests. The games in the competition were the dizzy bat, a pumpkin throw, bobbing for gourds, a pumpkin pass and a Jell-O and pumpkin slip ‘n’ slide.
Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Chi, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Xi Delta had teams participating in the event. Each team paid $30 to join, all of which went to the philanthropy goal. The teams were encouraged to bring non-perishable foods to donate. Joshua Causey, vice president of external affairs, said every one dollar contributed is seven pounds of food.
Phi Kappa Tau and Phi Gamma Pi did not participate in the event, but each contributed food or money to Lambda Chi.
Causey said the fraternity has already raised enough money for 5,000 pounds of food, which doesn’t count the non-perishable food they have collected.
“The event went really well,” Causey said. “We got a lot of support from faculty, local businesses and the Greeks. I would have liked to get the residences halls involved more.”
The event was open to anyone who wanted to form a team; however, only Greeks participated.
Theta Chi won the competition and trophy for the second year in a row. Alpha Xi Delta came in second followed by Delta Gamma.
“It was fun,” Delta Gamma’s Robyn Heiman said. “We got really messy and us DGs love the Lambda Chis for this event.”
In the spirit of the event, the rock, normally painted with different Greek letters, had a pumpkin painted on it.
Any student or faculty member can donate food to the North American Food Drive through Lambda Chi until Nov. 1 by dropping it off at the Lambda Chi house on Main Street across from Bombers.
“We just want 10,000 pounds,” Causey said.
