The Undergraduate Student Senate Allocations Committee recently approved events for PRIDE!Kent and the Kent State Glass Club.

The committee, which meets every Friday at 5 p.m., hears requests from student organizations that are interested in hosting a campus event. Committee Chairman Kevin Folk and ten other members decide which events will benefit Kent State undergraduates.

PRIDE!Kent will host Coming Out Week starting at noon on Monday. Students can visit with the organization and listen to a DJ performing in Risman Plaza at the Kick Off to Coming Out Week.

On Tuesday, Jamie McGonnigal, voice actor and gay rights advocate, will present a lecture called “Gay Stereotypes in the Media.”

At 8 p.m. on Oct. 21, students can join PRIDE!Kent in a Homecoming Halloween Party in the Rathskeller, located in the Student Center basement.

Coming Out Week will conclude at 8 p.m. on Oct. 22 in the M.A.C. Center with a performance by comedian Margaret Cho.

Folk said bringing Cho will cost $33,000 – making the event the second most expensive of the semester.

The Kent State Glass Club will host a six-day workshop in the Ceramics Lab Nov. 1 to 6. Visiting artist James Mongrain will lecture and demonstrate his glass blowing skills at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 in the Ceramics Lab.

“This program is beneficial to Kent State undergraduates because it is diverse and very educational,” Folk said.

Student organizations looking to host an event should fill out a request form. Request forms can be downloaded on the Undergraduate Student Senate Web site or picked up at the Center for Student Involvement or the Undergraduate Student Senate office, located on the first floor of the Student Center.

With the help of the staff of the Center for Student Involvement, Folk has created the Allocations Request Checklist, which is to be turned in along with the request form.

“The purpose of this checklist was to help alleviate the strain of filling out these often cumbersome requests,” Folk said. “Also, a second goal was to potentially prevent incomplete requests which often lead to misunderstandings between the student organizations and myself.”
