Flashes look to break three-game losing skid

With a refreshing weekend off, time to regroup following a three-game losing streak and plenty of practice time to prepare for another road game, Kent State coach Doug Martin is doing all he can to find the root of the football team’s problem.

The Flashes (1-4, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) head to Annapolis, Md. to take on the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy tomorrow. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.

The Midshipmen (2-2) present a big challenge for Kent State. Navy finished the 2004 season with a 10-2 overall record and the Emerald Bowl title.

“We’re working against stopping the wishbone offense which Navy runs,” he said. “We’re looking forward to this game, it will be a great contest in a great venue.”

The United States service academies tend to run a wishbone offense and the Flashes were lucky to have an extra week to prepare for it, Martin said.

The Flashes’ defense needs to put forth more disciplined play in order to be able to stop the wishbone offense, Martin said.

Martin added that if the Flashes’ offense can play the way they did in the second half of the past two losses in the first half of the Navy game, then Kent State has a chance to dominate.

“You have to understand that you need to be disciplined playing this wishbone offense, but also the mentality of who you’re playing,” Martin said. “What they are playing for is perfection. They will be the toughest group you ever walk out on the field against.”
