Construction work delays field hockey home opener

Kent State’s field hockey team will make their home debut Sept. 25 against the University of Michigan instead of Sept. 18 against Wake Forest.

This change in date is due to construction complications in the field hockey complex.

“We are building a new artificial turf field,” said Tom Euclide, director of architecture and engineering. “The project is on schedule, but there is just not enough time for the project to be completed in time for the players to use it as it was needed.”

Euclide says the field should be finished by the end of September at the latest.

Head coach Kerry DeVries is not worried about the recent schedule change affecting her team.

“About 50 percent of fields put in around the nation have a glitch here and there. In our case we’re right on schedule, except for just that weekend, “she said.

Although the new field caused some rescheduling, the team is happy to have the turf under construction.

“We are so excited to have the new field,” DeVries said.

The new field hockey schedule can be found online at www.kentstatesports.com. The finished field will be dedicated before the Oct. 2 game against Indiana University.
