An incoming freshman at Kent State was killed along with her mother and brother in a head-on collision on Interstate 71 Tuesday morning.

Ilham Hanbali, 18, of Hilard, was traveling northbound on I-71 in Medina County with her mother Hilda Hanbali, 43, and her brother Adam, 8, when Hilda swerved into the southbound lane to avoid three deer, said Gregg Westover, State Highway Patrol Lieutentant.

The family was heading to Kent State where Ilham was scheduled to take part in orientation, said Ron Kirksey, executive director of university communications.

At 7:05 a.m., the Hanbali’s Mercury minivan crossed the grass median into the southbound lane and struck a Mazda minivan driven by John Zielinski, 43, of Cuyahoga Falls.

Hilda was wearing a seat belt, but her two children were not, Westover said.

Adam was ejected from the car and was found lying on the berm, and Ilham was partially ejected, Westover said.

Zielinski was flown to Akron General Medical Center, but the Highway Patrol does not have any more information on his condition at this time.
