Events held today to commemorate May 4

The Sixth Annual Symposium on Democracy concludes today with a keynote address from the president of the Rock the Vote Foundation and a walking tour of the May 4 Memorial led by the designer and architect of the memorial, as well as many other events taking place in the Kiva.

Jehmu Greene is delivering the keynote address at 1 p.m.

A presentation on the creation of the May 4 Memorial by Bruno Ast, designer of the memorial, will begin at 3:45 p.m.

Other symposium events taking place today include, “In My America,” a performance by middle and high school students and teachers from Kent, Ravenna and Akron at 11 a.m. During the performance, students will express their experiences as Americans through music and poetry. The performance is part of the Wick Poetry Center’s outreach programs.

“Animating Democracy: Opportunity and Challenge at the Intersection of Art and Civic Dialogue” at 9 a.m. will explore the views that art is vital to society and that civic dialogue is vital to democracy.

All symposium events are free and open to the public.

Talk show hosts to visit Kent

Jim Quinn and Rose Tennent, hosts of the morning talk radio show Quinn and Rose, will broadcast live from Kent restaurant Mike’s Place tomorrow.

The show is played locally on 640 WHLO-AM. Mike’s Place opens at 6 a.m., and a line will be allowed to form at 5:30. Admission is free.

Mike’s Place is located at 1700 South Water St. at the intersection of state routes 43 and 261.

WHLO’s Web site, www.640whlo.com, is advertising Quinn and Rose’s appearance as being tied to the 35th anniversary of the May 4 events at Kent State.

“What really happened on that spring day?” a message on the Web site reads. “Hear the story from those who were there. Hear the story from those who know the truth.”
