Softball finally plays Akron doubleheader

Kent State softball finally had the chance to play Akron after a weekend of snow and wintry weather.

The Flashes defeated the Zips 7-5 in the first game but lost the second 5-0. The Flashes (21-21, 9-7 MAC) were originally scheduled to play at Akron (21-22, 5-12 MAC) in a three-game weekend series.

The Flashes offense began with junior catcher Ashley Fairhurst and sophomore pitcher Brittney Robinson, who both homered in the second inning. At that point, the Flashes tied the Zips 2-2. The two teams traded off runs until freshman catcher Whitney Lebowitz doubled to left center, bringing home two players and a victory. Robinson also posted six strikeouts and got her ninth win of the season, improving her record to 9-10.

In the second game shutout, senior third baseman Jodi Stevens had the only hit of the game for the Flashes in the fourth inning.

The Flashes continue their road trip 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastern Michigan.

Men’s basketball signs top point guard

The Kent State men’s basketball team began filling one of its open scholarship spots with the signing of Jordan Mincy.

Mincy, a 6-foot point guard from Memphis, Tenn., was announced as having signed with the Flashes yesterday.

Mincy “is a true point guard that makes his teammates better,” Christian said. “We’re very excited to have someone of his athletic ability and character enter our program.”

Mincy led his team atRidgeway High School to a state championship victory this year, averaging 10 points and six assists on the season. In the state championship game, Mincy posted eight points and 12 assists.

Mincy was ranked by Hoop Scoop as the second best point guard in Tennessee.
