Annual Lip Sync to be held Saturday

Delta Zeta is holding its annual philanthropy event, the Delta Zeta Lip Sync, at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Student Center Ballroom. It is open to the public, and admission is free.

Proceeds will go to two organizations: Sound Beginnings, an organization created by the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management, and to Gallaudet University, to which Delta Zeta has donated to since 1955. Both organizations work with the hearing-impaired.

“Our Lip Sync is one of the largest philanthropy events on campus,” Jordan Petersen-Fitts, Delta Zeta philanthropy chair, said. “It’s a huge event that many people put a lot of time and work into.

“Many people think that Greek events are only for Greek members, but that’s not true,” she said. “We encourage all students, faculty and community members to come to the Lip Sync.”

While there is no charge to attend, all attendees have the opportunity to make a donation by purchasing raffle tickets. Prizes donated by local businesses, such as gift certificates to local restaurants and tanning salons are among the prizes, Petersen-Fitts said.

Radio host set to bring Valentine’s

Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity is sponsoring The Valentine’s Day Talk of the Year at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Kiva. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.

National radio host Bev Smith will be the keynote speaker.

Smith, the host of “The Bev Smith Show” and “Straight Up,” is heard daily on American Urban Radio Network. Over the past 20 years, Smith has received nearly 300 awards for her contributions to television and radio. She is currently working on two books.

The Talk of the Year is a two-part event. The first part consists of a panel discussion featuring Smith, faculty and fraternity members, as well as the CEO of Royalty Studios. The panel will discuss relationships, specifically interracial dating and marriage.

She will deliver an inspirational message in the second part of the evening, discussing students going the extra mile and showing initiative.

“Bev can bring us the answers that so many students are looking for,” said Bruce Mitchell, Alpha Phi Alpha vice president. “She has so much power and impact. You can truly learn from her inspirational message.”
