Flashes split annual Akron meet

Just like last year, the Kent State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams split the annual dual meet with rival Akron on Friday at the Kent State Fieldhouse.

Akron trumped the Kent State women’s team, 84-66, whereas the Kent State men won, 80.5-70.5.

Last season ended with similar results. The women barely missed the mark, 76-75 and the men dominated, 87-63.

Kent State women won only six of 14 events, including the 60-meter dash, 4×400-meter relay, pole vault, triple jump, shot put and weight throw. Freshman Andrea Bryson led the Flashes with her first place finish in the 60-meter dash and third place finish in the 200-meter dash. Along with Bryson, junior Jackie Rodgers led the team, placing first on the pole vault and second on the long jump behind Akron’s Tamala Perryman.

The men won eight of 14 events to beat Akron by 10 points.

Junior Brent Shelby won both the shot put and the weight throw, being the only Flash to place first in more than one event.

Both men’s and women’s teams will compete next at the Nebraksa Triangular on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
