LGBTQ students will express their unique experiences through art during The Queer Voices art exhibit. 

The annual Queer Voices art exhibit will be open Tues. March 8 through Fri. March 11 in the Kent State Fashion Museum. 

Theartstory.org expressed that art within the LGBTQ community helps to inspire change, self-expression and create a platform where their voices can be heard.  

“Queer Art has used photography, portraiture, abstract painting, sculpture and collage to explore the varieties and depths of queer identity.” Theartstory.org states “Queer Art has addressed these issues covertly and overtly, insisting on a voice in the art world that routinely suppressed it.”

This exhibit is hosted by the LGBTQ Center; in previous years performance art was included. The Center is hoping to regrow the event after a hiatus due to COVID. 

“We hope to see this event grow each spring,” said Lo Denmon, assistant director for the LGBTQ Center. “Our interns have been given the lead on this project… It will be a surprise for me. I am excited to see what was submitted.”

To wrap up the exhibit, there will be a reception for the artists to celebrate their contributions March 11 5 p.m. 7 p.m. The museum will remain open for viewing during the reception. 

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free for Kent State Students and $6.00 for the public.
