Sun in Leo merges sustainability, community through fashion
January 31, 2023
Upcycled and ethically sourced fashion is on its way to Acorn Alley. Sun in Leo is opening its doors this weekend and will feature clothing, jewelry and accessories that are handmade or locally sourced.
Justine Gallo, recent Kent State alum, said the idea for the brand came to her during her senior year as a fashion design major. It became a reality when she received a grant through LaunchNet, an on-campus resource to help guide student entrepreneurs.
“I’ve like always had a soft spot for Kent and I feel like it’s definitely the place that needed this,” Gallo said. “I really want to be able to inspire other people, and I feel like this is the most receptive area.”
The store focuses on sustainability and community through fashion with products sourced from small businesses, thrift stores and even custom upcycled clothing and jewelry made by Gallo.
“I want people to just be more conscience to slower fashion and knowing that their favorite pieces don’t have to be thrown out if they lose a button,” Gallo said.
Customers can join in on circular fashion by donating pieces of clothing they no longer wear to the store in exchange for a discount on their next purchase.
Sun in Leo will officially open its doors on Feb. 2 with a grand opening on Feb. 4. More information can be found on Sun in Leo’s Instagram.
