The Kent State women’s lacrosse team lost to San Diego State 15-9 on the road Friday.

Kent State lost the battle in shots and turnovers – the Aztecs had 40 shots to the Flashes’ 20 shots. The Flashes had 19 turnovers while forcing 13.

“We gotta be a little more disciplined defensively and limit our fouling,” coach Brianne Tierney said.

San Diego State opened the first quarter with three goals, but Kent State was able to respond with an unassisted goal by sophomore attack Allie Lee. The score was 3-1 after the first quarter.

The Aztecs continued to pressure the Flashes and were able to score six straight goals to open the second quarter. Kent State junior attack Jackie Wolford stopped the run by scoring with five minutes left in the quarter.

San Diego State scored two more goals to make the score 11-2 at halftime.

Lee opened the second half with another goal, and senior attack Kenzie Sklar scored to make the score 12-4. Senior attack Morgan Kubicki scored and Sklar scored again for a fourth-straight goal for KSU.

“It seemed like we were clicking a little bit more and taking better shots,” Tierney said.

The Aztecs scored a goal with seven seconds left in the third quarter, bringing the score 13-6 going into the final period.

The Flashes still fought in the fourth quarter as Sklar, Kubicki and freshman midfielder Zayda Crumpton scored. But the Aztecs scored two goals in the quarter to clinch the win.

“We are excited to continue to progress and get better and continue to build confidence and learn how to win,” Tierney said.

Skylar leads the Flashes with 15 goals on the season, and Kubicki leads the team with seven assists.

Kent State will play in San Diego again and face UC Davis at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Flashes’ home opener is 4 p.m. Wednesday.
