The School of Theatre and Dance’s Black Box Series continues to give students the opportunity to showcase their original work outside the Main Stage Season.

Students must go through the application process before a committee selects which shows will fit best. This year, “Turned Upside Down” was performed March 6-7. Directed by sophomore theater design/tech/production major, Lauren Wyatt and senior theater design/tech/production major, Reilly Masi, productions such as these allow students to advance their career post college.

“Every semester, students are able to apply to be in the series itself,” Masi said. “This semester, I’m performing for the first time, me and my friend got together and we’re performing an entire show.”

Black Box Series has a way of bringing students together involved with theater by making impacts on students’ careers.

“The Black Box Series always gets a super positive reaction and I think it helps bring students together more,” Masi said. “For example, the freshman showcase that happens every year, seniors always put it on and the entire house always fills up.”

The next Black Box Series show “Pump 5” is being performed April 4. Questions regarding the show were not able to be answered despite numerous follow ups.

Director of the theater and dance program Tony Hardin likes the works that get displayed by the students.

“It’s top notch, there’s an amazing faculty and staff here and the students are phenomenal,” Hardin said. “The students receive excellent training and education by working not only on the main stage but with the Black Box Series.”
