Reader: I’m having trouble picking a major, I like so many things!

Dear Reader,

When choosing a major, there are so many options out there that it can be really scary but also so exciting! My advice is to start by making a list of your interests and possible jobs that could go along with those. Think about what you could actually see yourself doing throughout your life. It might help to take into account the benefits or disadvantages of the jobs as well.

If it is still too hard to choose after that, going in as undecided as an exploratory major is always a great idea! You can get some of your core classes done, have more time to decide what truly interests you, and you can get a feel for some of the possible classes you’d take in the future.

One last word of advice, even in the worst case where you might pick a major and end up finding a new one you enjoy more, you can switch! Most students switch their majors multiple times throughout college because it is so hard to make such a big decision at a young age! College is all about trying new things and it’s very normal to find new passions at this point in your life. I have already changed my major once as well. My first semester, I was slowly finding myself uninterested in my major and realized it was more of a hobby than a job. After switching, I have been a lot more fascinated with my classes and feel so excited for my future.

Picking a major might seem overwhelming, but it is such a fun time to explore things that make you happy. Good luck!
