Kent’s first cake pop shop opens downtown
April 28, 2023
On North Water Street, bright balloons and a large pink cake pop-themed van brought color to downtown Kent’s rainy spring day as Daisy Pops, Kent’s first cake pop business, opened its doors to the public.
Amy Mucha, a high school math teacher, decided to embark on her cake pop journey in March 2018. At first, making cake pops was a side gig for Mucha, but five years later she is opening the doors to a brick-and-mortar business.
“Cake popping at first was kind of a hobby,” Mucha said. “One day one of my students’ moms saw one and was like ‘Oh can I buy some?’ so I continued working on it as a side hustle for a few years.”
People constantly asked her when she would stop teaching and do cake pops full-time, Mucha said.
“I would roll my eyes and think ‘I love teaching and you can’t make a living off of cake pops’,” she said.
Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Mucha made the decision to end her 12-year teaching career and Daisy Pops took off.
“I’ve been working for Daisy Pops for 5 years,” Michelle Cremi, a former student of Mucha’s and cake pop artist said. “It is really cool because she would come to our class and talk about her business … she would often bring cake pops in for bribery purposes with math problems.”
What Daisy Pops offers
Daisy Pops has a variety of pops created by 3D-printed cookie cutters customized by Mucha.
The shop has 18 different ‘stocked pop’ flavors. Stocked pops are cake pops always in stock. They come in packs of four or a dozen. Some flavors include brownie batter, chocolate cookie dough and strawberry crunch.
Cake pops are usually known to be round balls of dough, but with Mucha’s cookie cutters, they can be any shape or design.
Gluten-free pops and pup pops, treats for animals, are also available for purchase.
And the shop does not stop at just selling cake pops. Daisy Pops will also host private cake pop-making classes in the shop’s kitchen.
“We’re so excited to gather the people we love and those who have supported Daisy Pops for so many years,” Mucha said. “I want it to be more than just come in and get a cake pop. I want it to be a sweet experience.”
Daisy Pop’s grand opening will continue April 29 from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M. at 154 N. Water St. in downtown Kent.
