ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLARS

The National Golf Coaches Association named 504 collegiate women golfers to the All-American Scholar Teams.

Among those 504, three of Kent State’s very own were recognized. Juniors Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) and Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand) as well as sophomore Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina). This is the third straight year Gavier has been honored and second in a row for Germino.

This was Bradley’s first year being named to the team.

Earlier this year Gavier, who has maintained a 3.9 GPA in international relations, was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America women’s at-large third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Germino is currently working toward a degree in organizational communication and Bradley is majoring in applied communication.

Kent State women golfers have consistently set a high standard of excellence. Each year since the 1999-2000 season, Kent State has had at least two women golfers earning All-America Scholar honors from the NGCA. This season is the third straight year, and fourth overall, that three KSU golfers earned this honor.

BARROILHET CONTINUES TO COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY

Kent State sophomore women’s basketball player Tamzin Barroilhet, is currently competing in the FIBA U-20 European Championship, hosted by FYR of Macedonia. Barroilhet, a native of Sainte-Maxime, France, has dual citizenship and plays internationally for Great Britain. She has played international ball for four straight years. She played for the U-18 squad in 2007 and 2008 and last year she ran with the U-20 team.

Through four games of group-stage play, Barroilhet helped Great Britain finish 3-1 in Group B and qualify for the quarterfinals of the B Division tournament.

Against the host squad from Macedonia, Barroilhet came through in the game’s final moments. A put-back bucket inside of a minute remaining and a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left in the contest helped seal the deal for Britain. Barroilhet finished with 10 points on the day and aided Great Britain to a 70-69 win on Monday. The victory clinched Great Britain’s ticket into the quarterfinals.

After winning their first three games, Great Britain dropped a 72-58 decision to the unbeaten Czech Republic Tuesday afternoon. Great Britain started group play with a 61-42 win over Belgium and then followed with a 54-50 victory against Hungary.

WRESTLING

Last week, the Kent State Wrestling team announced the schedule for the fall.

The Flashes season starts on Nov. 6 where they will be tested by Iowa State and Chattanooga in Salem, Va., who were ranked second in last year’s NWCA Coaches poll.

In their second weekend of competition, the Golden Flashes will take on three Atlantic Coast Conference opponents (Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech) Nov. 13 at the Hershey Duals in Hershey, Pa. If all goes well, Kent State hopes to repeat as Body Bar Invitational champions on Nov. 20 in Ithaca, N.Y., before traveling to Missouri for a Dec. 4 matchup against the 10th-place finishers from last year’s NCAA Championships.

“There are seven teams on our schedule that should be ranked in the top 25 to begin the year,” Wrestling Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. “And of the 16 teams at the Virginia Duals (Jan. 7-8), 10 of those will more than likely be top 25 teams.”

Kent State closes out the regular season with four MAC meets beginning Feb. 4 at Buffalo. Rival Ohio travels to Kent on Feb. 11 and two days later, the Flashes visit Eastern Michigan. A Feb. 20 trip to Mount Pleasant could decide the regular season champion when KSU takes on defending conference champion Central Michigan. The 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament March 5-6 in DeKalb, Ill., will be hosted by Northern Illinois. The Golden Flashes will then head to Philadelphia March 17-19 for the 2011 NCAA Championships.

The Golden Flashes return nine starters from its 2009-10 team. The team was ranked No. 16 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll.
