Kent State to test gas turbines, warns of potential outage

Kent State will test the ability for gas turbines to power the Kent campus without being connected to the electric grid on Wednesday, June 19, according to an email from University Housing.

If all goes well, the release said, there will be no interruption in power. However, electricity, chilled water, air conditioning and steam service may be reduced in potentially large sections of campus.

The test comes amid a record-breaking heat wave in northeast Ohio. The National Weather Service has placed Portage County under a heat advisory until Friday, June 21.

“This test is routine in nature, and we typically schedule these types of maintenance events when there is the least impact on the campus community, such as over holiday breaks or when the university offices are closed,” said Eric Mansfield, the university spokesperson.
