Kent State celebrated a major milestone over the weekend with the grand opening of Crawford Hall, the new business and entrepreneurship building.
The celebration, attended by over 250 donors, various university officials and representatives from the governor’s office, highlighted the collaborative effort that brought the $380 million project to life, achieved without any state funding.
The event kicked off with an inspiring speech from Debrah Spake, Dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. She highlighted the importance of Crawford Hall in efforts to enhance the educational environment of the university.
Spake symbolically rang the trading floor bell to signify the hall’s official grand opening, marking a new chapter in the university’s commitment to business education and student success.
Valoree Vargo, Vice President of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, stressed the monumental achievement created by the completion of Crawford Hall. The project exceeded its $350 million goal by raising $383 million in total and is being used to support various university projects. This includes the expansion of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering as well as the construction of the FedEx Aeronautics Academic Center.
Vargo also pointed out that over $160 million has been set aside for student scholarships and academic programs, and she highlighted the important role of philanthropy in enhancing the university’s capabilities.
“The success of these initiatives is a testament to the generosity of our alumni and friends,” she said.
Todd Diacon, President of Kent State University, discussed how the transformative power of higher education and entrepreneurship has not only changed his life for the better, but his family’s as well. Diacon thanked the donors whose contributions further enabled the construction of Crawford Hall.
“Because of their generosity, generations of future Kent State students will have their opportunity at success,” he said.
Claire Crawford spoke on behalf of her grandfather, Ambassador Edward Crawford, and shared her family’s deep connection to the university. She thanked the leadership for their vision of creating a modern space that encourages learning and innovation.
“The core values of accountability, collaboration, inclusivity and respect exemplify the environment that Kent State fosters,” she said.
She emphasized the importance of these principles in preparing students for many future challenges to come.
The grand opening ceremony concluded with a spirited performance by the Kent State’s orchestra, led by Assistant Professor of music and Director of the orchestra, Isaac Terceros, who played “Lord of the Dance.” The musical performance capped off the day, filled with celebration, appreciation and a shared vision for the future of education for Kent students.
As Crawford Hall opens its doors, it promises to not only be a place for learning, collaboration and innovation for future generations, but a shared part of the community for decades to come.
