In 1999, someone in the United States died every 38 seconds due to cardiac arrest.

Now, in 2010 that number has been reduced by 25% with the help of Automated External Defibrillators.

Firefighter and teacher of the AED training class here in Kent, Scott Simmons, stresses the importance of being aware of the AED’s in your area.

SOT SCOTT:

“THEY’RE EVERYWHERE, BUT WE DON’T REALLY REALIZE THEY’RE THERE UNTIL WE ACTUALLY NEED THEM.”

Timing is everything when using the machines…But when used properly they help make the difference between life and death.

SOT SCOTT:

“WE CAN GET THE AED AND DELIVER A SHOCK WITHIN FOUR MINUTES, WE HAVE AN 80% CHANCE OF GETTING THAT PERSON BACK VERSUS NOT HAVING THE AED DELIVERED TO US.”

Both John Ferlito, and Simmons encourage students and community members to get certified for CPR and AED operation. –NAT SOUND– Even though certification is not required for using an AED, prior knowledge and practice on the machine is recommended.

SOT JOHN:

“I DON’T KNOW IF THERE IS A LAW THAT REQUIRES IT, BUT IT IS RECCOMMENDED.”

SOT SCOTT:

“I AM AWARE OF THREE DIFFERENT INSTANCES ON CAMPUS THAT LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED BECAUSE OF THE AED.”

Even without proper training the automated step- by- step directions given by the machine guide the user through three easy steps that could lead to saving a life.
