Junior Mackenzie Hughes earned medalist honors while leading the Kent State men’s golf team to a second-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges tournament in Jonesborough, Tenn., today.

Hughes won the tournament, carding a final score of 13-under par.

Kent State coach Herb Page said Hughes played “magnificent.”

“He put on a clinic the last 36 holes,” he said. “It was fabulous, the score he shot (Sunday) was 65.”

In the par-72 course, Hughes recorded rounds of even, 6-under par and 7-under par.

As a team, the Flashes shot an overall score of 7-under par. No. 25 Virginia won the tournament, tallying a final score of 11-under par.

“We got off to a good start and got a little momentum going,” Page said. “We got our confidence and played quite well.”

The Flashes finish the fall portion of their 2010 schedule with the United States Collegiate in Alpharetta, Ga. The tournament begins Oct. 24 and finishes Oct. 26.
