Language conference to be held in kiva

An educational language conference will be held tomorrow in the Kiva.
“Language Mediation in the 21st Century: Communities in Collaboration” is sponsored by Student Accessibility Services, Great Akron Deaf Services and the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies.
Registration for the conference will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the keynote speaker, Daniel Koo, will start his speech at 8:45 a.m. Koo’s speech is the only presentation that is free to the public.
The workshop will end at 4:45 p.m. The conference will conclude with the American Sign Language Storytelling Competition from 7-9 p.m.
The entire conference costs $30 for the public and $15 for students. All students are welcome.
The conference will feature four breakout speakers that will give students a better understanding of visual and spoken languages and how they are processed, Coordinator Leah Subak said.
The speakers include:
• Dr. Daniel Koo, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Gallaudet University.
• Sherry Bradley-Koo, an elementary teacher at the Maryland School for the Deaf.
• Dr. Erik Angelone, an assistant professor of translation studies at Kent State.
• Natasha Curtis, a doctoral student at Kent State and a Spanish translator and interpreter.
