Three months and 1821 people later, Crooked River Adventures is sailing smooth down the Cuyahoga River.

Crooked River provides canoe and kayak rentals for trips starting at Tannery Park, lasting either four and a half miles upriver toward Brust Park in Munroe Falls or six and a half miles toward Waterworks Park in Cuyahoga Falls.

Kent State Adventure Center graduate assistant and livery manager of Crooked River Adventures Chris Hendricks said he is thrilled with the program.

“It’s the only thing of its kind around here. It gives a totally different perspective of the city,” Hendricks said.

Once the trip is completed, participants are picked up by the Crooked River staff, who load the boat on the trailer and take everyone back to Tannery Park. A Pedal and Pedal package is also available in which the staff will drive the boat back to Tannery Park, while participants ride a rental bike back. ?

Trips are available on the weekends by reservations or a drop-in basis. Weekday trips are also available with a 24 hours notice. Prices are $18 for the four and a half mile canoe trip and $20 for the four and a half mile kayak trip. ?

For those who lack experience or could use a refresher course, private canoe and kayak classes are available, one for three hours and another for a full day. ? ?

“You’re going through stuff completely untouched. Most people don’t even know it’s back there. Even with a lot of people on the river it’s still extremely quiet,” Hendricks said. ?

The program will close October 15 and reopen again in either late April or early May. According to Hendricks, tubes are also being considered as rental items in addition to the canoes and kayaks, but this will be determined at a later date. ?

“It’s really exciting seeing how we went from May until now. We’ve become a legitimate business and everyone we put on the river has good things to say,” Hendricks said.
