The rocky road of East Summit Street will soon be smoother.

City Engineer Jim Bowling said via e-mail that the city of Kent will start repairing and repaving East Summit Street between Loop Road and state Route 261 in mid- to late October.

Contractors are still bidding for the project so there are no concrete dates set just yet.

An estimated 17,000 vehicles travel along the street every day, Bowling said. The repaving will take approximately two weeks with the contractor maintaining traffic control. During those two weeks, the contractor will be permitted to close the roadway for short periods of time.

The contractor chosen will have the option to work on Saturdays during non-home game weekends or evenings from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Bowling also said the project includes milling two inches of asphalt, adding pavement fabric and placing two new inches of asphalt back on top. The city will also connect the bike path from Loop Road to Horning Road.

The repairs to East Summit Street are part of the city’s Capital Improvements Projects, consisting of $3.5 million invested annually in the city’s utilities, roadways and traffic control systems. This project is estimated at costing $267,500, with up to 80 percent funded by federal gas tax money received through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study.
