Style Eye on Kent

Starting this week, two fashion students will be compiling the “Style Eye” section of A.L.L. They’ll be scouting the campus, looking for students and professors who show a unique sense of style.

Our goal of “Style Eye” is to scout campus and look for those who show a unique style. We will then take their photograph and ask them a few questions about their inspiration for what they are wearing, which will appear in A.L.L. each week. We truly look forward to meeting new people and listening to their ideas on their sense of fashion.

Gore Vidal once said, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say and not giving a damn.”

Style is inspirational; it’s what we all look to when it comes to street-wear fashion. Earning my degree in merchandising, I hope to become a men’s wardrobe consultant. Tom Ford and Cary Grant are my inspirations in doing so. In my opinion, they have revolutionized the menswear industry, changing the path of fashion design. From that, they have greatly influenced my opinion in fashion.

I’ve always had a fascination with style; it’s a decorative art form. I believe our bodies are a blank canvas, and we paint our canvas with clothes to create a masterpiece.

The idea of “Style Eye” came to me when I realized that many students and professors display a unique sense of style, and I thought they should have the opportunity to share their ideas on fashion. For me, style is an outward expression for my inner self, and it should show one’s true character.

This is a great opportunity for many of us to display our creative side that is often overlooked. I asked Will Riddle to help me on this project because we have one important thing in common: the love of style.

My life was changed when I was standing in line for my Baja Chicken sub at Quiznos and Remah approached me about being a part of her “Style Eye” team (I think it was because of my Korean gladiator sandals, to be honest).

Much like being scouted for a modeling contract, I jumped on the opportunity to be a part of something campus-wide dealing with fashion. I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge about the business because of my personal passion for innovative design, great designers and the art of constructing garments.

I believe my eccentric personality and “dare to be different” attitude have helped me gain a certain edge in the field of fashion. I hope through this column, Remah and I are able to inspire more people to think outside the box.

Style doesn’t have to be diluted just because we are in Ohio and not a fashion capital of the world. So throw those imitation Ugg boots away, and let’s get down to business. Really though, throw them away.
