LGBT group aims to provide community

The president of PRIDE!Kent called out, “How many people have had sex in the back of a car?” at the first meeting last night. Several students stood up.

Attendees played an icebreaker to demonstrate common ground they share with each other.

It is important for the organization to “provide a community setting where we all relate to each other,” said Darren Stevenson, programming chair.

The group serves as a social organization and community for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. Straight members are also welcome.

“Anyone who is a friend of the LGBT community is a friend of PRIDE,” Stevenson said. He added that the previous president was a straight ally.

PRIDE stands for People Respecting Individual Differences Everywhere.

The group’s mission is to “provide a safe, happy place to all people,” he said. Stevenson added that people who may feel they have gotten the short end of the stick for being different can be assured they will be welcomed within the group.

President Max Harrington said recruiting and retention of members will be a focus this year for the organization. Even though there were more attendees than chairs tonight, he said the numbers tend to dwindle as the semester continues. He wants to keep the numbers up.

PRIDE!Kent is working with many other student groups such as Black United Students, College Democrats, Harambee and Delta Lambda Phi. Working together will help make all members involved be more well-rounded, Harrington said.

Delta Lambda Phi, a fraternity for gay, bisexual and progressive men, was present at the meeting. President Sam Windler said the group has weekly meetings, does social activities and community.
