Superman, Rainbow Brite, Batman, Harley Quinn, a Ninja Turtle and … Carol Cartwright.

PRIDE!Kent held its prom Friday night in the Rathskeller. The dance’s theme was “Heroes and Villains.” Along with dancing and drinking, the festivities included a costume contest, a game with prizes and a dance contest.

“We’ve been such a politically active group this year,” said Christopher Taylor, former president of PRIDE!Kent. “It’s a good way to just wind down.”

Taylor, who dressed as Cartwright, said the social setting of the dance gave people a chance to relax after working all year.

Sophomore English major Trish Homsher won the costume contest dressed as Harley Quinn from Batman. Nick Froehlich, freshman psychology and art major, and Jamie Henderson, freshman fashion design major, came in second dressed as Quailman and Patti Mayonnaise from the cartoon “Doug.” Samantha Weaver, 2005 human development and family studies graduate, came in at third as Rainbow Brite.

The concept behind PRIDE!Kent’s prom is to let students bring dates of their choice to a dance without fear of discrimination, said Amanda Boyd, president of PRIDE!Kent.

She said those who knew their sexuality in high school might not have been able to bring a same-sex date to their prom, so PRIDE!Kent’s prom lets them have their turn.

Following the prom, Boyd said members had the opportunity to go camping over the weekend at Country Acres Campground in Ravenna.
