JMC Media Board still seeking ‘Burr’ editor for fall

New student media leader positions were chosen for the Daily Kent Stater, TV2 and Black Squirrel Radio on Friday.

Top positions were decided by the Journalism and Mass Communication Media Board. Before reaching a decision, candidates were interviewed by journalism and mass communication faculty members as well as two student representatives. Candidates were questioned about their vision for their respective future positions.

All positions were filled except Burr editor for the fall semester. The board has reopened the application process. Students interested in the position should pick up an application in room 101 of Taylor Hall. The deadline to return applications is April 27.

The board chose senior newspaper journalism major Meranda Watling as the fall editor for the Daily Kent Stater.

Watling, currently the managing editor, said she would like to see fewer errors, better editing and a broader range of subjects in the Daily Kent Stater. She added that she would also like to focus more intently on the Web.

“I want to make StaterOnline the go-to place for Kent State students,” Watling said. “Before they go to MySpace, Facebook or even before they check their e-mail, I want them to check out StaterOnline.”

Jackie Mantey, sophomore magazine journalism major, was named editor of the Summer Kent Stater.

“Since we are weekly I still want students to see us as a primary source of news,” Mantey said of the Summer Stater, which comes out every Wednesday.

Mantey said she would like to concentrate more on the presidential search. She added that she would like to see longer pieces appear in the paper.

Since many students go home for the summer or are working at internships, staff is limited.

“We are going to play up the talents that we do have,” Mantey said.

The TV2 general manager position was given to Mike Paquin and Katie Morse will become the news director. Micah Manus was chosen as the Black Squirrel Radio General Manager.

Paquin, Morse and Manus could not be reached for comment.
