Kent State takes three of five MAC honors
March 10, 2006
Senior forward Lindsay Shearer was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Tuesday after leading the Kent State women’s basketball team to a 12-4 MAC record.
Shearer also led the league in scoring with 20.6 points per game overall and 21.8 points per game in the conference. She was named MAC East Division Player of the Week five times this season, the latest being March 3 after the Flashes’ 73-59 victory over Buffalo.
Scoring 38 points against Auburn earlier in the year, Shearer scored the most points in a single game by a MAC player this season. She was also honored last week by ESPN The Magazine as the University Division Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball and was also named to the Academic All-America First Team.
In addition to Shearer’s honor, senior guard Malika Willoughby and junior La’Kia Stewart were named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year, respectively.
Willoughby led the MAC in steals with 79 and assists with 140, and she ranks eighth at Kent State in career steals with 252.
Stewart played in 22 games off the bench, averaging 8.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She also finished the year with five double-doubles.
Bowling Green’s Curt Miller received the Coach of the Year award.
