School of Art to offer classes to local children
February 8, 2006
In efforts to reach out to the community, Kent State’s School of Art is embarking on a new venture it calls Art Enrichment.
Art Enrichment is an extension of the Saturday morning art programs the school has been offering for more than 20 years.
“We are targeting schools that don’t offer art classes or art programs,” said Robin Vande Zande, assistant art professor. “That’s why we call it enrichment.”
Children ages 4 through 14 from Kent and the surrounding communities are welcome to attend the Monday evening classes. They will be taught by 13 pre-service art educators who have prepared lesson plans specially tailored for the children participating in the program.
“Our students will be teaching the kids art activities,” Vande Zande said. “Some children will be making sculptures, others might be making ceramics, and some will be painting and drawing.”
Based on their ages, children will be placed into one of several classrooms where they will learn about arts and crafts. They also will be introduced to some aspects of art history.
Monday classes will run from 4 until 5:30 p.m., and the cost of enrollment is $40. The deadline to register is Friday.
