Historian Nathan Stoltzfus will speak at 8 p.m. today in the Kiva about how a group of women successfully kept Nazis from taking their Jewish husbands to concentration camps.

The program, “Popular Protest in Nazi Germany: The Women of Rosenstrasse,” is being presented by the Jewish studies program and Hillel.

The program will revolve around one particular instance where Nazi soldiers were rounding up Jews in a neighborhood in 1942, said Richard Steigmann-Gall, director of the Jewish studies program.

Gestapo troops had successfully purged a large number of Jews from Germany when this event happened in 1942, Steignmann-Gall said. The soldiers were trying to take away all the Jewish men married to Christian women or Jewish women married to Christian men.

The group, mostly comprised of women, protested and kept the Nazis from taking their significant others, Steignmann-Gall said.

The event is free and open to the public.
