How complaints are filed at the Office of University Ombudsman

All student complaints about professors begin at the Office of the University Ombudsman.

The first step for students who have a complaint or concern is to meet with Ombudsman Greg Jarvie.

After meeting with the student, Jarvie sets up a plan to deal with the problem.

About half of the complaints are solved informally, with either Jarvie or the student resolving the issue directly with the professor.

For more formal or serious complaints, Jarvie sends the complaint to the head of the professor’s department.

Jarvie said the office receives about 500 complaints a year on a wide variety of issues.

“You name it, we’ve dealt with it,” he said.
