OPINION: Why you should believe in soulmates

Let’s talk about love.

I’m not talking about that fleeting feeling you felt for your high school sweetheart, but the real kind. The kind that makes your heart flutter and your smile widen just thinking about them.

Picture the person you’re meant to be with for the rest of your life. A person you have an immediate connection with from the moment you meet. The kind of individual that makes you want to better yourself, the one love that will never fade no matter what happens.

I’m talking about the person who you immediately knew was different from the moment your eyes met. Call them what you want, your true love, perfect match, the love of your life or your soulmate.

Now we’ve all heard the fairy tales and seen the movies, but the truth is there is truly someone out there who is meant for you.

Personally, for me, I’ve always had super high expectations when it came to soulmates. I believed with all my heart that I’d meet my Prince Charming and he’d be perfect in every way. He’d be the kindest and funniest person in the world, a big nerd just like me and would probably look exactly like Nick Jonas. If he was going to be my soulmate, he’d have to be perfect.

And somehow I found him… In a broken-down elevator in Franklin Hall. He is everything to me. We sing musicals together, watch superhero movies side by side and he’s always making me laugh. He’s literally everything I’ve ever wanted and more.

He’s all I ever wanted in a soulmate and because of him, I know soulmates are real.

Now, let me get one thing straight, I’m not a super naive and delusional person. I know the pain that can accompany romance, but that doesn’t change the fact I’m a hopeless romantic. No matter how many times I get my heart broken, I’ll always believe there is one person truly meant for me and there are so many reasons for that.

Soulmates aren’t what you see in romance movies, though. It’s not Prince Charming coming to rescue you from your tower, or a man writing a love letter to you every day. They might not understand everything about you. Maybe they don’t like the way you chew your food or the way you mutter when you speak. But the feeling you get when you’re around them is just like in the movies. They make you happier than anyone ever has and when you talk to them, you can’t help but get butterflies in your stomach.

You should believe in soulmates because sometimes you’ll find someone who just feels so right that you’ll become best friends and companions through life, like actual soulmates. They’ll always be on your mind and they’ll make you so happy, even if the whole world feels like it’s crashing down around you.

You should believe in soulmates because in a world where there is so much evil and so much pain, there is someone out there who’ll give you the unconditional love that is so beautiful and so pure that nothing else will matter.

I believe everyone deserves love and everyone has a chance to love. I believe that even though there is a whole universe out there, eight planets, two hundred and four countries, eight hundred and four islands, seven seas and seven billion people in the world. There is truly someone out there that you’re truly meant to be with.
