Random Rants with Annemarie: Halloween essentials

This Halloween season there are lots of new scary movies coming out. So today, I am going to give you some recommendations on hot new movies to see, old classics to rewatch and spooky songs to chill your bones.

So buckle up and grab your emotional support blanket, you’ll need it!

To start off, I recommend the new movie called “Talk to Me” from the highly proclaimed entertainment company A24. I personally love A24, so once I heard about this movie I knew it was bound to be a good one. What I didn’t expect were the twists and turns and to actually be a little spooked by it. It’s hard to freak me out with movies anymore, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this in theaters with my boyfriend. The plot—without spoilers—is this girl goes to a party with her brother, her best friend and her best friend’s boyfriend. At said party, the people there have a mummified hand and are playing a game. If you hold the hand and say the phrase “talk to me” you can see and talk to the dead. It is a real rollercoaster of a movie, and I really liked it.

Another movie I recently saw in theaters was “Saw X.” I saw it with two of my cast mates from All Systems Go, and it was a really fun time. If you are a fan of the “Saw” franchise, then you will love this movie. It really rewards longtime fans. Now if you are more of a casual fan like me, it is also a good watch (if you can handle copious amounts of gore). I saw the first five movies YEARS ago, so I vaguely remember the plot. “Saw” is more about the revenge aspect rather than an overarching plot or narrative. Yes, it does have one and does have a universe and a timeline, but the main focus is the punishment of people who have “done wrong” in the eyes of whoever is acting as Jigsaw. So, I would go see it but only if you have a strong stomach.

This next movie is more campy than scary, yet I would go rewatch it in theaters over and over again. It is so goofy but also really entertaining. This next movie is “M3GAN.” Oh boy, now this movie is wild. It’s about a doll that was made to be a companion for a little girl, but the doll basically ends up going crazy. That is all I am going to say, because you just need to experience this one itself. This movie has become a meme, gotten a show at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal, had a whole marketing campaign where the Megan doll was beefing online with CHUCKY from “Child’s Play,” and just…it’s just insane. Go watch “M3GAN.”

Now, I made a little playlist to help you get into the spooky mindset. It’s going to be a mix of classic Halloween songs and modern, along with it being from several different genres. Some songs on it are explicit! So be warned, don’t put this playlist on in front of your mom. Or do, I can’t stop you. There are a few that aren’t “Halloweeny” kind of songs but more classic songs you’d hear at a party. I hope you enjoy it, and Happy Halloween!
