OPINION: Conforming for Survival

In a world where conformity is key to survival, people are prone to blending in to stay safe. Society conforms to rules, follows trends and will typically avoid drawing attention to themselves.

We become masters of blending in and expressing ourselves in ways that are common in popular culture.

Because humans are social beings, we inherently know that the chances of survival are greater when our behaviors match the ones around us. To align with other attitudes, behaviors, practices and beliefs, despite our values, is an act of conformity.

Trends like Drunk Elephant skincare products, Stanley Cups, TikTok, Taylor Swift and a million more are easy to follow in order to fit in. That is why trends are so popular and can be so intriguing or appealing.

In the intricate tapestry of human society, the desire to fit in is a fundamental aspect of our existence. From an evolutionary standpoint, the need to belong to a group has been deeply ingrained in our biology. Fitting in serves as a crucial survival mechanism, fostering cooperation, protection and social cohesion.

In the evolutionary past, strength in numbers meant increased chances of survival against predators, access to shared resources and assistance in hunting and gathering. Those who failed to integrate or were cast out from social circles faced dire consequences leading to isolation and vulnerability.

While we have evolved, the principle remains the same: there is safety in numbers.

Today, fitting in translates to finding a niche within a community where people can find support, security and a sense of belonging.

Fitting in is not merely about self-preservation, but also fosters social bonds essential for the functioning of a community. When individuals feel accepted and valued within a group, they are more inclined to contribute positively to the collective goals.

Cooperation extends beyond immediate survival needs to encompass broader societal functions such as commerce, governance and innovation. Just as species must adapt to shifting ecological conditions to survive, we must navigate evolving social landscapes.

This adaptability encompasses not only conforming to social norms but also embracing diversity and inclusivity, because embracing differences fosters resilience, creativity and a broader perspective, ultimately strengthening the fabric of society.

In essence, while the desire to fit in is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history, it is essential to strike a balance between conformity and individuality.

Embracing uniqueness allows for personal growth, creativity and newness while also nurturing a diverse world. If we keep following the latest fads online and lacking ambition, the emphasis on individuality will be lost creating a detrimental impact on the functionality of mankind.

Without change, creative thinking, and passion the world would stand still. Let us not forget to stand out, be different and exude confidence in a world full of fads. By celebrating the differences that make us who we are, we can create a world where everyone feels valued, accepted and empowered to be their authentic selves.
