Men’s track and field capture second title, women’s with best finish in 10 years at MAC Indoor Championship

The Kent State men’s track team won the Mid-American Conference indoor championship as the women’s team finished second in the indoor championship this season. 

The Director of Track and Field, Nathan Fanger, was named men’s MAC Coach of the Year as the program lifted its second championship.

The women’s team had its best performance in 10 years, putting up 85.5 points as Eastern Michigan won the championship for the second year in a row. 

Kent State had 21 athletes who were named to the First and Second All-MAC teams — second in the conference to Eastern Michigan (22).

Men’s First Team All-MAC

  • Junior jumper Alexandre Malanda: season-best triple jump of 15.46m 
  • Freshman sprinter Sean Callahan Jr.: posted a time of 6.67 seconds in the 60m run to tie the facility record set in 2017 and tying for the second fastest time overall in Kent State history.
  • Graduate student long sprinter Quintin Cooks: season-best 800m run of 1:51.95. 
  • Senior hurdler/long jumper Alex Shields: season-best 60m hurdle run with a time of 7.95 and a 23′ 10″ jump in the long jump. 
  • Junior high jumper Liam Vinskovich: recorded a season-best in the high jump of 7′ 0.5.”
  • Sophomore multis Ayden Bath: placed first in the heptathlon in the MAC Championship, recording 5,441 points.

Men’s Second Team All-MAC

  • Senior mid-distance runner Ethan Yost: recorded the fastest mile time in the MAC with a time of 4:03.25, which is the fourth fastest time in KSU history.
  • Freshman long sprinter Owen Miller: ran a person-best in the 60m run with a time of 6.67 seconds to tie the facility record.
  • Senior mid-distance runner Jacob Mirabell: his time of 4:12.31 in the mile run is best for 16th in the MAC.
  • Graduate student mid-distance runner Trey Double: recorded the fifth-best mile time (4:06.81) and tenth-best 800m time (1:53.21) of all MAC runners.
  • Senior pole vaulter Kristian Kneffler: recorded the second-highest pole vault height in KSU indoor history after clearing 17’-3.50. 
  • Redshirt senior thrower Nolan Landis: his 56’5.25” throw in the shot put was second in the MAC.

Women’s First Team All-MAC

  • Graduate student thrower Gabby Bailey: recorded the second-farthest shot put throw in the MAC this season during the MAC Championships (52’ 4.75”) and captured the conference title. Won one MAC Player of the Week award this season.

Women’s Second Team All-MAC

  • Senior sprinter Taylor Korytkowski: had her best performances at the Doug Raymond Invitational (7.58 sec 60m time — 12th best in the MAC this season and a 56.11 sec 400m time — 11th in the MAC) and the MAC Championships (24.52 sec 200m — eighth in MAC). 
  • Senior long sprinter/hurdler Alexandria Verbancic: had the 20th-best MAC time in the 400m race during the Tyson Invitational (56.96 seconds). Competed in the 4×400-meter relay that clocked the best time in the MAC at the time this season and was the third-fastest time in program history.
  • Freshman sprinter Amryne Chilton: had two wins at the Jud Logan Memorial event. Her first collegiate win came in the 200-meter dash (24.79 seconds) and had a victory in the 4×400 relay race (3:42.04).
  • Graduate student sprinter Jericha Petrella: posted the fourth-best time in the MAC this season in the 400m (55.06 seconds), which is seventh all-time in Kent State history at the Akron/Kent St. Dual. She was part of the 4×400 relay that had the second-best time in the MAC (3:42.04 time).
  • Redshirt junior thrower Aliesha Shaw: got a second-place finish in the MAC Championships in the shot put event, finishing behind Gabby Bailey (51’ 1” distance — a personal record).
  • Graduate student thrower Grace Luther: recorded a personal-best weight throw in her win at the Meyo Invitational. The throw was the second-best in the MAC and traveled 63’ 9”.

The Flashes will continue its season on March 22 when they travel to West Virginia to participate in the Stan Romanoski Open.
