Named after Kent State’s unofficial mascot, the Recreation and Wellness Services will run the 12th annual Black Squirrel Race Saturday.

The 5k course will be marked throughout campus, through a few small hills, and the Esplanade.

There is a team option if runners want to avoid running solo. Runners are encouraged to post their photos or videos on their social media accounts and tag the Recreation and Wellness Services at #KSU2024BlackSquirrel. Donations will be accepted to further support the club sports programs, as well as the students involved.

Tanner Poe, a junior public relations student, signed up for the Black Squirrel Race to help her train for a half-marathon.

“I’m running it with my roommate who is also training for the same half-marathon, so I’m really looking forward to running it with her,” she said. “I also hope that there will be a lot of black squirrels on the course during the race!”

The Black Squirrel Race is one of two races that the Recreation and Wellness Services host. Depending on the Homecoming game, they hold the Bowman Cup 5k Race as their signature Homecoming event.

Although all are welcome to participate, there is a registration cost, and the price varies depending on the distance of the race and if the runner wants a t-shirt.

The race is set to begin at 8 a.m.
