Letter to the Editor: Kent Dance Ensemble

Geoff Broadhead

Dear Editor,

I join those who congratulate the KSU Dance Division’s Kent Dance Ensemble for many years of performance excellence. Yet the Ensemble came into being 27 years ago, not 25.

It was in 1988 when as Dean of the academic unit, I appointed Lynn Deering as Artistic Director of the newly formed Ensemble she named the Kent Dance Collective. At her departure from KSU (she is now Professor of Dance at Cleveland State University), I appointed Vincent Brosseau as Artistic Director of the student performance Ensemble (1989), then re-named the Kent Dance Ensemble. One year later Vincent departed (he is now Professor of Dance at Savannah College of Art and Design, GA) and I then appointed Darwin Prioleau to take over the Ensemble.

There seems ample evidence that the student Ensemble has grown and developed considerably over the intervening years. The name and functioning of the Ensemble may have changed somewhat since its inception. After all, the name and functioning of the institution itself has.

Yours sincerely,

Geoff Broadhead
