Kent State wrestler Mack McGuire was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday following his 133-pound title victory this past Saturday at the Navy Classic, held in Annapolis, Maryland.

The 133-pound junior was spotless in the tournament, going 5-0. He began the perfect day with a first-period pin of North Carolina’s Alexander Rinaldi, and then followed suit with a 10-0 major decision victory over George Mason’s Robert Dooley.

In the quarterfinal round of the tournament, McGuire toppled former Kent State teammate Alfredo Gray of Cleveland State, 5-1 and rolled over Navy’s Colton Rasche by a final score of 6-2 to advance to the finals.

The only wrestler to make McGuire sweat a little was Wisconsin’s Ryan Taylor, whom McGuire met in the championship round. In that match, McGuire bested Taylor, who moved up a weight class from 125 to 133 for the Navy Classic, 6-3.

Now 8-4 on the year, McGuire is ranked No. 16 in this week’s InterMat rankings, according to kentstatesports.com.

The Kent State wrestling team will return to the mat Saturday, Dec. 6, as the Flashes open up MAC dual competition on the road against Buffalo.
