The highly touted freshman Chase Johnson was named the Mid-American Conference Co-Golfer of the Week.

Johnson was honored with the award for his performance at the Flashes’ latest tournament, the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. He played his best rounds of golf in Columbus, where he finished the tournament in second place at 1-under-par.

Head Coach Herb Page said he has been impressed with Johnson’s play this season. He said for him to only play three tournaments as a college freshman is impressive and doesn’t think this will be Johnson’s last golfer-of-the-week award.

“The biggest thing is he is playing with a lot of confidence,” Page said. “I think this is the first of many he is going to win.”

Page said Johnson could be one of the leaders on this year’s golf team. He said Johnson is a very humble kid and is off to a great start in his college career.

“It sort of validates what we feel about him and I’m sure it is going a great little confidence booster for him,” Page said.

Johnson led the Flashes with a seventh place and a 6-over-par at the Inverness Intercollegiate tournament in Toledo last week.

The golf team will head to Johnson City, Tennessee, for the Bank of Tennessee Tournament on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Golf Club of Georgia.
