The Kent Police Department performed a high-risk traffic stop late Monday morning on Lincoln Street north of The Province apartments after receiving a call about a man with a gun.

Lt. James Prusha said Raymundo Herrera, 26, of Ashton Lane is now in custody following the stop, which resulted in four charges.

Kent police charged Herrera with aggravated menacing, improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon, Prusha said.

He said the responding officers are trained to perform high-risk traffic stops when they receive information about a driver possibly being armed.

“When it’s a real risky traffic stop and we think someone in the car might be armed, rather than just going up there and getting shot, we stay back by our cruisers, point guns at them and order them to come out with their hands in the air,” Prusha said. “That’s what was done.”

Police will release more information on the stop as the responding officer files a report.
