Deadline for mammogram registration approaches

The Kent State Women’s Center is conducting mammograms for university employees, spouses and students Oct. 8-10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Screening mammograms will be conducted in Tiffany Breast Care Center’s mobile mammography unit, which will be parked in front of the Women’s Center. The mammograms will take about 12 minutes each.

Most health insurance companies cover annual mammograms for women over 35. However, uninsured participants can pay the out-of-pocket cost of $125, said Cassie Pegg-Kirby, the Assistant Director of the Women’s Center.

The American Cancer Society recommends women older than 40 get an annual mammogram. The organization also reports one in eight women will develop breast cancer, and mammograms can detect breast cancer in 80 to 90 percent of these cases.

“It’s really for a short period of time and very little discomfort that could make a huge difference in catching something devastating,” Pegg-Kirby said.

Some appointments are still available for Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10. The deadline to register is Oct. 3. To register, call the Women’s Center at 330-672-9230.
