Kent State track and field set new team and personal records

Against some of the best runners in the nation, the Kent State track and field runners set seven personal records at the two-day Meyo Invitational this weekend.

Junior Melinda Sawnor placed second against 72 competitors in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:08.84. Her time also was sixth fastest in team history.

In the men’s 800, junior Joshua Schmidt ran a 1:50.49 for his own personal record in the event and the third-best time for the program. Schmidt’s record got him an eighth-place.

In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Shanequa Williams and freshman Chanitta Westbrooks finished fifth and eighth place, respectively. Both runners set personal records in the event.

Williams claimed the second-best time in Kent State history with a time of 24.35, and Westbrooks’ time of 24.74 took over fifth-place in Kent State’s records.

Westbrooks also set another personal record and team record with a time of 7.66 in the 60-meter during qualifying. She placed 10th overall in the event and moved up to eighth-best for a team time.

In the very competitive men’s 200-meter dash, senior Princeton Bryson took second with a time of 21.55. In the 60-meter dash, Bryson placed fourth with a time of 6.81.
