Last Sunday was quite the event for the world of music at the MTV Video Music Awards. Between Beyoncé announcing her pregnancy and Katy Perry sporting some strange outfits, how was there even room for something more jaw dropping? Well, Lady Gaga did it again.

One of the world’s most interesting and talented performers may have taken things too far this time. There’s no dispute that Lady Gaga is unbelievably talented and writes songs that everyone will learn the words to whether they want to or not. She’s a talent and knows how to get her music listened to … even if it requires some strange acts.

With all of that said, maybe the line was crossed when she appeared at the VMAs as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. Calderone opened with a dark monologue about her onetime lover, Lady Gaga. Strange? I think so. At first, it could have been funny, but the act went on all night and she never broke out of her male character.

We all know that Gaga is a strong spokeswoman on equal rights for the homosexuals, and quite frankly, I’m all for that. But this time, it appears that she could have found a better way to express her feelings on the matter.

Things got rather awkward when Britney Spears took the stage to accept her Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and Calderone provided some strange, yet inviting, body language toward Spears implying that she’d like a kiss. Spears quickly and politely declined, making a joke about her kiss with Madonna during the 2003 VMAs. After accepting the award, Spears embraced Calderone with a warm hug.

Calderone/Gaga’s performance was an excellent one, except when she fell off her piano. That may have been just a bit embarrassing for the pop star. Later, she was spotted in the audience with a glass of scotch, which she chugged right before she took the stage to accept an award. After seeing that, it was easy for viewers to assume that the singer may have been intoxicated for most of the evening, and that may have been why she fell off her piano.

After accepting the awards on Gaga’s behalf, Calderone said, “You know, I think that this award means more to her than anything she’s ever received. She was texting me after the award, after I picked it up for her, and she just said, ‘You know, more than anything I’ve ever gotten before, this means more to me, because “Born This Way” is about the fans and the fans are more important to me than anything I do…’”.

Gaga tweeted later that night how thankful she was for her fans and for the two more Moonmen she received. She also explained how glad she was that the fans accepted Calderone attending the awards instead of her. I’m not sure the alter ego thing wasn’t my favorite stunt of Gaga’s, but it sure did snatch lots of attention for her, yet again.

Although the cross-dressing alter ego may have been a little too much for me, I can’t deny that Lady Gaga is an extraordinary artist and talent, and for that, I will always be a fan.
