The Kent State wrestlers took second place in the Mid-American Conference Tournament with two of its five championship contenders victorious in their final rounds.

Junior Nic Bedelyon won the 125-weight class after pulling a 10-3 win over Ohio’s Gabriel Ramos.

Junior Dustin Kilgore picked up Kent State’s second and final championship by defeating Ohio’s Eric Schuth 12-6 in the 197-weight class.

The three other championship contenders lost to their competitors. Central Michigan’s Scotti Sentes pulled a 9-1 major decision over the Flashes’ 133 freshman Tyler Small.

Sophomore Casey Newburg lost his match at 184 to Brad Dieckhaus, 3-2. Newburg then wrestled for second place and beat Central Michigan’s Craig Kelliher 3-1.

Junior Brendan Barlow lost another close matchup with Jared Trice at heavyweight, 3-2. Barlow and Trice went into overtime as the two have done so many times in their matchups. Trice won this bout in the second tie-breaking period.

Junior Ross Tice earned himself a third place finish by scoring a 12-1 major decision over Steve Wilson. The win advanced Tice into a battle for true second against Central Michigan’s Mike Miller. Tice took that match as well with a 14-3 major decision.

Junior Marcel Clopton finished third in the tournament in the 149-weight class after his 7-6 win over Ohio’s Bradley Squire. Freshman Brandonn Johnson at 174 took third place as well after a 6-0 decision over Northern Illinois’ Caleb Busson. Johnson wrestled Ohio’s Nick Purdue for second, but Purdue beat the freshman 4-2.

These Flashes’ results compiled a second place score of 73.5 points. Central Michigan finished just slightly higher at 79 points.
