Women’s rugby team on the verge of first postseason

Just two games away from the playoffs, the Kent State women’s rugby club team is in a position to make it to the postseason for the first time in its history.

“Right now there’s a three-way tie between us, Wright State and Denison,” coach Kelly Yost said.

If the team beats Ohio in its away game Saturday, it will have a 50 percent chance at going to the playoffs.

“It’ll definitely be a tough game,” Yost said. “We’re not underestimating our opponents. We’re definitely bringing our ‘A’ game.”

The women’s rugby team has never made it to playoffs, but the team played a practice scrimmage with Akron on Tuesday to prepare for its possible postseason beginning.

“We’re going to try to be really aggressive (when we play Ohio),” team captain Julie Battaglia said.

The team takes Ohio in Athens on Oct. 17 and plays Denison at home on Oct. 24.
