A 29-year-old man died June 20 from a brain injury suffered while playing softball on June 18 at the Allerton Sports Complex.

T.J. Sommers collided with another softball player and sustained a brain injury, said Kim Rufra, associate director of recreation services. An EMT dispatch was called at 7:08 p.m. that night.

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center rents out the complex on Thursday nights to a church league, Rufra said. Sommers was playing for his church, Bethany Mennonite Church.

Rufra said Kent State is hosting a softball tournament in honor of Sommers. The money raised will help his family with medical and funeral expenses.

Rufra said the tournament will be held August 8 at the Allerton ballfields. For more information, contact Rufra at [email protected], or call the SRWC at 330-672-4732.
