Known as “Senator Sunshine,” California State Sen. Leland Yee is a strong advocate for students’ free press rights.

Yee will be at Kent State to talk about why he sponsors legislation in favor of student expression, and why the nation needs to do so as well. His speech will be held at 11 a.m. today in the First Energy Auditorium.

Yee is part of a one-day workshop held by Kent State’s Center for Scholastic Journalism. The workshop will discuss the freedoms of the student press under current law.

Yee has enforced a law that prevents administrators from striking back against high school and college faculty because of what their students write.
