Sports staff shares its top picks of the season

Moment of the year

The end of the Miami game on March 4. The crowd was into the game the entire time, and the ESPN cameras were there. It was awesome when the crowd rushed the court. The players took their pictures with the MAC East Championship banner, sang the alma mater and cut down the nets. It was everything this season has been and very fun to watch.

Game of the year

Kent State-Akron the first time around. The Flashes were coming off a season in which they lost to Akron three times and were down big in the first half. The Flashes came back in the second half and won in front of a large crowd.

MVP

Al Fisher. The first-year transfer was the star of the team down the stretch. Who can forget his big shots against Akron, IPFW and St. Mary’s?

Moment of the year

It’s a small moment, but it’s the team’s home opener against Hampton. The Flashes were winning and the game was winding down when Mike Scott was going to the free-throw line. He stepped back and waved his arms up and down to get the crowd pumped up, and the crowd obliged. Scott had gotten elbowed in the head earlier in the game and needed to leave to get stitches. When he came back, he was wearing No. 20 because his No. 21 jersey had blood on it.

Game of the year

It has to be Feb. 23 at St. Mary’s. I was there, and it didn’t look good for the Flashes when they were down nine in the second half. But when Al Fisher made two circus layups late in the game to put it away, it got even the St. Mary’s crowd buzzing.

MVP

I have to pick Mike Scott. It’s the most difficult choice: Scott has been the team’s leader, along with Haminn Quaintance, from Day 1. He is the face and the voice of the team.

Moment of the Year

My favorite moment was watching Laing Kennedy pump up the crowd after the scuffle broke out between Kent State and Akron players at the end of the game at the M.A.C. Center.

Game of the year

The snow was coming down pretty hard and I had just finished my radio show. We got the e-mail saying class was canceled and the first thing I thought was: We have to drive to Central Michigan for the 20th win of the season. After seven hours of risking my life and coming to the brink of death, Jonas Fortune, Jeff and I had made it to Central. It was great, they won and everyone was shocked to see us. Nothing like seeing history and having a story to tell our grandkids.

MVP

I love Rashad Woods, so he’s my MVP. He is so talented and has so many weapons. Plus he never changes his facial expression. But it’s tough to say Quaintance didn’t have a terrific season.

Moment of the Year

My moment was the Al Fisher last-second layup against IPFW. It set up what was to come all season from Fisher, clutch, game-winning shots that left everyone in awe.

Game of the Year

The game of the year is one most of you only read about. Way back in December, the Flashes tipped off against IPFW, in a game that would be closer than anticipated. The Flashes won thanks to a layup from Al Fisher with six seconds left. The game did two things: It showed Kent State could perform in the clutch and it showed the faith that coach Jim Christian had in his junior transfer.

MVP

Al Fisher. Not because of the amount of points he scores, but because Fisher brought something to Kent State this season that the Flashes lacked last season-a player who can create his own shot.
