USS agrees to support Gmail pilot

Dave Dalton, executive director of educational technology, asked the members of Undergraduate Student Senate at today’s meeting to support and pilot a new e-mailing system for the university.

The university is in close conversation with Google for a possible FlashMail/Gmail conversion.

Dalton said he’s heard of a lot of dissatisfaction with the state of FlashMail today.

“The capacity of the system is very limited, it’s hard to navigate, it’s ugly,” he said. “We would forward e-mails through Gmail (and gain) greatly expanded e-mail storage – dramatically greater than now – and universal access.”

Students will benefit from the new system if all goes as planned, Dalton said. No date has been set for a university-wide impact.

The senators present agreed to support the new system in the piloting stages.

The meeting concluded with senator reports, including advances in student voter registration as well as the success of the first Donuts with the Dean.
